What’s Really Blocking Your Business Growth?

Dr. Denise Dennis

Do you ever feel like you're working tirelessly to move the needle on your business’s growth only to end up feeling frustrated by an unpredictable bottom line? It’s not a lack of effort that’s stalling your growth, but a lack of clarity.

The truth is, most coaches don’t even realize how much potential they’re leaving on the table simply because they haven’t identified what’s holding them back. It’s time to stop guessing and start knowing for sure what it takes to build a thriving coaching practice. When you identify the hurdles to predictable growth and then create actionable steps to solve them, your business will truly thrive!

Clarify Your Goals

Vague goals lead to unpredictable results. Without a clear understanding of where you want to go, it can be challenging to measure your progress or determine the steps needed to get there. Instead of fluffy feel-good goals like "grow my business," focus on specific, measurable objectives. Utilizing the SMART framework — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—can help you articulate your goals more clearly.

Actionable Tips:

  1. Write down three specific goals for your business over the next six months, detailing what success will look like for each. Remember to use the SMART goal formula!

  2. Break down your long-term goals into smaller, manageable milestones to track your progress more effectively.

Measure What Matters

What you don’t know CAN hurt you and your business!  If you know something's holding you back, but you can't pinpoint what it is, look to the “Measurable” and “Relevant” parts of your SMART goals.  Identifying, tracking, and measuring the relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are essential for understanding business performance. They are the measures of how far you are progressing towards your goals.  Your KPIs may include metrics such as client acquisition costs, conversion rates, and client retention, and can provide valuable insights into effective and ineffective strategies.

To achieve predictable revenue growth, it's important to focus on metrics that directly influence profitability. Use these insights to make data-driven decisions about your business, allocating resources more effectively and focusing on high-impact activities.

By consistently monitoring and analyzing these KPIs, and then acting on what you have learned, you create a feedback loop that continually informs and refines your business strategies, leading to more sustainable and predictable growth.

Actionable Tips:

  1. Set up a monthly metrics review process to analyze your KPIs, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions for resource allocation and strategy adjustments.

  2. Develop a dashboard that lets you see all of your most important metrics at a glance, making it easier to stay focused on what truly matters for your business growth.  (Need help with this?  We can help!)

Improve Business Processes

Many coaches are so focused on their clients that they neglect their business processes. Process inefficiencies can be a huge roadblock to growth, eating away at your time and profit margins.  It's crucial to have streamlined processes for lead generation, client onboarding, service delivery, and follow-up. Efficient processes not only improve client satisfaction but also allow you to scale your business more effectively.

Often, the biggest roadblocks to predictable growth are the ones we can't see. Creating flowcharts, mind maps, and other visual representations of your business processes to identify bottlenecks, redundancies, or areas for improvement can help you uncover hidden patterns in your data. Once your current processes are clear, focus on streamlining these processes to enhance client satisfaction and retention.

Actionable Tips:

  1. Conduct a thorough audit of your current business processes, identifying bottlenecks and inefficiencies that hinder growth. These insights can reveal unexpected obstacles and opportunities, allowing you to proactively address issues before they impact your growth trajectory.

  1. Implement streamlined solutions, including automating repetitive tasks such as appointment scheduling, invoicing, and follow-up emails to free up time for high-value activities.

Leverage Technology and Digital Marketing

It seems like there are new advances in technology every day, which makes it challenging to keep up.  Unfortunately, many coaches struggle to reach their target audience or streamline their operations processes due to a lack of technological innovation or integration or a lack of digital marketing expertise. Managing your operations and marketing processes manually is time-consuming, prone to errors, and results in stunted growth.

Technology offers numerous opportunities to scale your coaching business and improve client engagement. Automating repetitive tasks and streamlining your workflows can save time, reduce errors, and improve overall efficiency. Embracing digital tools can help you automate routine tasks, enhance your online presence, and reach a wider audience.

Actionable Tips:

  1. List your top three time-consuming tasks and identify automation tools that can handle these processes.

  2. Map out your customer journey and identify key touchpoints that can be automated, such as welcome emails, follow-ups, and nurture sequences.  (Need help with this?  We can help!)
